With tomorrows Apple’s iOS 5 official launch, iPhone Dev team has updated the redsn0w 0.9.9b5 to jailbreak iOS 5 especially for the iPhone 4 & iPhone 3GS users who wants to run iOS 5 while staying with unlock status. As they have said before the new redsn0w will get few of the PwnageTool features which allows it to produce custom firmware files without baseband update.
The new Redsn0w 0.9.9b5 is available for Mac OS X only but soon they will release it for Windows users, redsn0w 0.9.9b5 now includes the functionality of the public URLs for the iPSW files, means you wont have to give it any firmware file you can simply perform jailbreak by giving it the public URL of the IPSW file. Redsn0w 0.9.9b5 is still in tethered jailbreak status, and does not supports iPad 2 and iPhone 4S yet, but according to the team they will soon release the untethered jailbreak for all iOS devices.
They just give the PwnageTool functionality to Redsn0w 0.9.9b5, because most of the devices is still in tethered boot so they elected redsn0w to rock the world and gives the functionality of “Custom iPSW” to redsn0w which allows you to cook custom firmware files without upgrading the baseband of your device. They have also announces that they will soon release the update for ultrasn0w to unlock the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS on iOS 5.
Here is How To Preserve Baseband While Upgrading To iOS 5:
Step 1: Open RedSn0w 0.9.9b5 and select ‘Extras’ and ‘Custom IPSW’
Step 2: Select the iOS 5 firmware (It will be in ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates/ on the Mac.)
Step 3: Once it builds the new firmware, select ‘Pwned DFU’ from RedSn0w.
Step 4: Put your iPhone into DFU Mode, and RedSn0w will take over and put your device into Pwned DFU mode.
Step 5: Close RedSn0w, Open iTunes, and it should recognize your iPhone in recovery mode.
Step 6: While holding Option on your Mac’s keyboard, click ‘Restore’ and select your NO_BB firmware that was created in Step 3. BE SURE THAT YOU SELECT THE NO_BB firmware, and not the stock firmware, or else you will update your baseband.
Step 7: Once your iPhone is restored and back to the home screen, you can either jailbreak now, or wait until UltraSn0w is updated for iOS 5.
